LegakwanaLeo Makgekgenene (b. Gaborone, Botswana)is a MFA graduate from the Michaelis School of Fine Art (University of Cape Town) who specialized in New Media. Makgekgenene’s research is an interrogation of power/authority in Botswana and its consequences on the development of Botswana’s Women’s Movements. Makgekgenene’s work aims to trace the complex evolution of the Women’s rights, resistance and alliance activities since independence in 1966 and, further, to explore- specifically for black women – alternative points of access to critical pedagogy and radical action.Makgekgenene was selected for the  Thapong Arts Centre and British Council’s collaborative initiative Echoes of (Un)silenced Voices (2019) the Women Soaring Project’s Women Antiracists (2022)exhibition. Makgekgenene is a core member of The Botswana Pavilion which interrogates local and regional socio-eco-political issues in an earnest bid to positively influence Botswana’s social strata while enriching the traditional (artistic) archive through bilateral mentorship. Makgekgenene has participated in solo and group exhibitions in Botswana, South Africa, Italy, USA and several other locations with The Botswana Pavilion through their work with Pro Helvetia (2020), Unfinished Camp via Zeitz MOCAA (2022) and Sakhile&Me (2022). Makgekgenene is currently based in Gaborone, Botswana where they work as an artist and arts educator.
